A worked example

Take £120 including VAT at the UK standard rate of 20%. The VAT inside it is not £24 — that is the mistake this page exists to stop. Divide by 1.20 to get the net figure, then take the difference.

Gross (including VAT)£120.00
Net (excluding VAT)£100.00
VAT at 20%£20.00

Subtracting 20% from £120 gives £96, which is wrong by £4. The VAT fraction for a 20% rate is one sixth of the gross.

Common questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, divide by 1.20; at 5%, divide by 1.05. Subtracting the percentage instead gives a figure that is always too low.
What is the current UK VAT rate?
The standard rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to things like domestic fuel and children's car seats, and some goods — most food, children's clothes, books — are zero-rated, which is not the same as exempt.
Is Irish VAT different?
Yes. Ireland's standard rate is 23%, with a reduced rate of 13.5% and a second reduced rate of 9%. Choose Ireland in the country selector and the rates change with it.
Do I have to show VAT on my invoice?
If you are VAT-registered, yes — the net amount, the rate, the VAT charged and your VAT number all have to appear. Our invoice generator lays them out for you.
